Introducing Alexis Astrology: She’s Here!

It’s Oct 1. It’s been a while since I last shared here. I’ve been deeply engaged in the process of setting up my practice legitimately — from setting up an office allowing in-person clients, to establishing a solid foundation of ethics, and so much more. Creating a safe space for astrology is very important for me, as we do, in a way, get psychologically naked during a reading.

Interestingly, I didn’t initially plan to build it so quickly, but fate had her own plans for me. I realized I could no longer delay this journey — life events were consistently nudging me to embrace my identity as an astrologer fully. Right on time too, as I approach my 30th birthday.

After an interlude spent pursuing the establishment of my private practice, I find myself returning to this cherished space with a clearer sense of purpose. This process has involved a lot of hard work and dedication, and I’m proud to announce that in the midst of eclipse season, I am launching Alexis Astrology.

I’ll definitely be updating astrology-related content on the website for SEO purposes, but I’m happy to share some of my thoughts on my personal entrepreneurial journey here as well. I plan to keep Medium for non-astrology-related thoughts once the practice is more settled and I have the freedom to focus on things other than finding the next customer and striving to be a good astrologer.

It’s a real skill to be good at what you do while running a business at the same time. It’s an energy I’m no stranger to, though now I have the advantage of understanding sales and marketing much more than I did when I was younger.

Today, I’m sharing my entrepreneurial journey launching my practice, where I balance accomplishments with challenges, set boundaries, and learn valuable lessons along the way.

Accomplishments

Let’s start with the accomplishments shall we?

View from my office (this is the meeting room)

A Legitimate Home for My Practice — My Office in the Heart of Town!

Starting on a bright note, one of my biggest accomplishments has been setting up a beautiful office in a co-working space right in the heart of town. Having a physical, tangible space adds a sense of professionalism to my practice. The energy of the people around me makes the atmosphere feel legitimate and motivating.

It feels incredibly reassuring to know that I have a place to work from and meet clients in a safe, quiet environment, and work alongside other professionals. I would hate to meet anyone in a Starbucks coffee shop where anytime the sudden whir of the barista’s blender making a frozen frappuccino would very much disrupt the message I’m trying to convey to my client.

For a great price, I secured an office with an amazing view of the Singapore Central Business District, the Singapore River (to the right of the picture), the Supreme Court, and Marina Bay Sands. I spent an entire day touring several locations, running around town till my legs were begging me not to go on anymore, and ultimately settled on this one. My address even has the numbers 1 and 08–08 in it, which I like for auspicious reasons.

Setting Up My Website in Record Time

Another milestone I’m proud of is setting up my website in what felt like RECORD TIME! I set it up in 2 days, when I know that years ago, it would have taken me 2 weeks or 2 months from procrastination! The rest of the week was making some small tweaks and refinements to it, and I have since launched the website live. I knew exactly what I wanted this time, which helped me really accelerate every step of the way. Of course, AI played a part in speeding things up, but my vision for Alexis Astrology has been crystal clear from the start.

Alexis Astrology Home Page

That’s what you’ll see when you go to www.alexisastrology.com. I chose the main colour scheme as dark blue, with brights and a mix of dark palettes. I’m really proud of it, and encourage you to go visit it where you can explore more about what I do, what I stand for, and what I can offer you.

That photo is an art piece at Burning Man. It really resonates with me the message of “Going Home”!

Getting Google Business Profile Registered

Another key achievement has been getting listed on Google Business. This may seem like a small step, but it officially legitimizes Alexis Astrology as a recognized and searchable business. You can even see my address and click on directions to see how to travel there!

Having a business address really helps and accelerates the process of being legit. My presence on Google increases credibility and allows potential clients to find and trust my services more easily. I’m thrilled to have crossed it off my list — it’s a critical step in building an authentic and reliable practice.

Getting Private Limited Registered

I’m running Alexis Astrology under a registered private entity, (a Pte Ltd is the equivalent of a US LLC) and everything will be properly documented and filed accordingly. I’ve been engaging a corporate secretary to help manage all the affairs, (ie. corporate tax documents I don’t want to deal with), ensuring everything from expenses to income is well-tracked and in order. With all these steps, I feel confident that the business is set up on a solid foundation for long-term success.

Setting Up a CMS

One of the most exciting developments has been setting up my client management system (CMS) on HubSpot.

After attending a three-day sales course, funded through my government education credits (which we’re all entitled to), I learned how to create a system that keeps everything organized.

I think about a patient management system (PMS) in a traditional clinical setting where the doctor or pharmacist pulls up whatever was written in the patient’s file before, they can see when and why, what was prescribed, and review their medical history. In the same way for me, the CMS allows me to house all my astro client information in one place, including what they’ve come to me for, their feedback after the consultation, and any significant astrological patterns, aspects, and placements.

This setup helps me run Alexis Astrology like a well-oiled machine and offers a high level of professionalism to my clients.

Settling on a logo

Finally, of course, is the logo. The logo you saw when you first landed here was designed with modern, elegant serif fonts, subtly embellished with decorative flourishes and sparkles while maintaining a modern aesthetic. I love the logo. It gives off an upscale, sophisticated look that I truly enjoy, and hopefully, that message comes across to everyone who sees it. By the way, I designed the logo myself!

Deciding on the name

Hang on, actually there’s one more accomplishment, and that’s deciding on the name of my practice! It’s such a simple, yet fundamental first step. I explain on my website why and how I finally settled on the name Alexis Astrology. I wanted it to reflect what the practice stood for — elegance, insight, and empowerment. I’ll save the rest for when you go visit my website and find out more yourself! There’s a sense of pride in the thought and intention that went into both the name and the logo, and hopefully they leave a lasting impression on everyone who sees them.

Delays, Set Backs, Learning Experiences

Of course, with any businesses, we take the good with the bad.

Misconceptions and Skepticism

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in this journey is simply coming out into the world and telling people I am an astrologer.

Where I am, there will be two common responses to my introduction.

1)People find me weird, or they are concerned. They ask, “Why would you want to do something like astrology? Do you even make money?”

I understand their concerns, because, I have the same concerns myself!

I asked myself why I didn’t become a lawyer like my brother, or a doctor like my dad, or just work in an office/bank like my mother. The income is stable and there is no constant need to worry about 1000 other things at any given time. Pursuing astrology in my own private practice isn’t exactly the most conventional career path, and it comes with its own set of uncertainties. When people ask those questions, they’re often reflecting a wider societal mindset that equates success with more traditional, linear career choices.

I get it — astrology is often misunderstood, and people don’t always see it as a legitimate profession. But despite these doubts — both from others and from within — I’ve found a deep passion and purpose in astrology. It’s not just about the money (though, like any business, that’s important too). Connecting with people, helping them root cause recurring patterns, map behaviours, explore childhood traumas, gain that sweet essence of clarity, and providing guidance through the lens of cosmic insight is why I’m doing what I do. There’s value in that, even if it’s not immediately obvious to everyone. So while their concerns are valid, I’ve learned to take it in my stride, and embrace the unconventional career path I took, trusting that with time, dedication, and the right tools, I can make this both a fulfilling and sustainable career.

2) There’s also confusion with Feng Shui or Chinese metaphysics. “Oh, astrology! Is that like Fengshui?” is a very common other response. They assume I will be able to tell them which direction to place their bed and their desk and the other shenanigans that come with Fengshui.

It was fine for a while, but I am starting to find it a bit annoying to be constantly mixed up with it. The next time someone says this to me, I’ll respond with a “no I don’t tell you to blame the furniture, I tell you to blame the planets!” (which is an inside joke I find quite funny), but will undoubtedly leave them even more confused than before.

3) There is actually a 3rd common reaction, though it is subtle. A hurdle I have to overcome is the lack of respect for astrology as a profession.

When I was matched with a buddy at a business conference, (later I found him to be an Aries, which is historically the sign least likely to come see me for an astrology session), he didn’t understand it at all and asked me many scientific questions and despite me explaining the best I could, he still didn’t see how it worked, for him or otherwise. This was a business conference for all professions, so it reminded me that explaining astrology to non-astrologers or non-believers is fundamentally an important skill, but also a long and tedious one.

People don’t always take what I do seriously. So, I’ve learned to caveat my introduction by adding that I’m also trained in counseling and working towards a counseling license. Titles like Master’s in Psychology or Counseling command more respect here, and are very common degrees other astrologers hold. I do feel the need to work doubly and triply hard to prove that the work that I do can be a credible profession.

One incident stands out from the same business conference just weeks ago. After I gave my speech, which I felt was gripping and kept you on the edge of your seat, a man in his 40s gave his feedback to me to say, “You shouldn’t use astrology terms to a general audience because you sound cuckoo!” Those were the exact words he used. I was taken aback and didn’t respond immediately. The next day, I approached him and said, “I remember you. You claim to be a healer, but I find you a conundrum. Your words were sharp and pointed. You may think you’re speaking the truth, but I don’t feel your intentions were good.” There was another lady there who backed me up. I think he didn’t expect me to go up and confront him, or that I would have supporters. After that, I noticed he mellowed down for the rest of the conference.

I’m glad I stood up for myself — something that’s a key part of what my practice is all about.

Bank account hiccup

Not surprising, one of the other challenges I faced was when I applied for a business bank account, and the application got declined. The reason given to me was because my services fell under “psychic services.” I got quite upset and immediately started phoning in my two closest astrology friends, one who is also a professional practicing astrologer, to tell them of my predicament. I got the message to try again or try another bank, which I will.

To be honest, I don’t think this classification was accurate at all. Astrology, or at least the way I practice astrology, is far from psychic work — it’s a science, and an insightful, data-driven field! It just goes to show how much the general public don’t understand astrology at all. Still, it’s a reminder that even in professional growth, there are misunderstandings. I’m working through this, and it’s all part of the process.

Exploring Boundaries in My Practice

Another thing that’s actually really important is exploring where the boundaries are in my practice. These rules and guidelines aren’t imposed by any boss, colleague, or organizational culture that came before me. I am now in charge of deciding what’s okay and what’s not, and that is both liberating and terrifying.

One of my first clients came in with his friend, which put me in an awkward position. I generally prefer to keep readings private, as it allows for a more focused and intimate connection. But since this client was a referral from another astrologer, who had him fly in all the way from the US, I found it hard to say no. Also, because his friend was an astrologer I initially thought it would be okay, but the experience turned out to be quite uncomfortable for me. Throughout the reading, it was hard to stay focused on my client because the astrologer friend kept interrupting, and I felt like I was being observed and critiqued for my technique. It made it difficult to connect with the client on a deeper level.

Reflecting on this, I’m setting the clear boundary of not having two people sit in on a reading moving forward. This will give me a better chance to connect with the person I’m reading for, especially if they’re the type who doesn’t speak up much during consultations, and frankly, having my reading interrupted by technique critique was quite annoying.

Other boundaries I’m asking myself as the practice grows are:

  • How should I set the time limits more strictly so that I cover everything in one session or it doeesn’t run over?

  • How do I balance being compassionate while maintaining professional distance?

  • How many clients actually want to get a quick reading versus actually getting a good, insightful, transformative session, and do I want to take them at all? How many hard questions do I ask?

  • How much of a person’s childhood trauma am I willing to dive into, can I handle that and hold space for them?

  • If another astrologer wants a reading from me, do I give it for free, at full price, swap, or full price with a discount? I think the answer is quite clear for me. I might not want your reading, so I will not swap. I will not give a reading for free either, as I’ve been professionally certified, and still ongoing more learning. To give something for free is to undervalue myself. An extension of my generosity comes in the form of an industry privileged price.

I want to honor the value of my work, and working through dealing with all of these situations come with the need for careful consideration. These decisions are part of the boundaries I’m learning to set in order to protect both my business and my energy.

What’s next?

I’ve officially moved into Founder Mode, and as I continue to grow Alexis Astrology, the next steps involve continuing with my master’s application and ongoing training in counseling, with the aim of becoming licensed in the future. This will help solidify my practice further and give me more tools to offer even deeper support to my clients. Being placed on a governing board is also something a goal of mine, as it would give me a strong sense of assurance and credibility within the field. These developments are exciting and will help shape the journey ahead.

Unrelated, but I’m also thrilled starting yoga teacher training in January! The potential crossover skills from this training could be incredibly useful when working with people, especially within the health and wellness industry. It feels like a natural extension of the work already being done and a new way to support my clients holistically.

Wrapping up

To wrap things up, I’m happy to say that as Alexis Astrology continues to evolve, each new experience, both the highs and the challenges, will come with their joys and learning lessons.
